MMG unveils new work for Colorado tourism

Last year the Colorado legislature rocketed the budget for tourism advertising to $19 million from $5.5 million. The account moved from Praco in Colorado Springs to MMG in Kansas City.
MMG does a lot of hospitality work. But from what I see in today’s Denver Post article, and on their website, most of their work is safe and uninspired. That’s fine – the government is commissioning creativity. But we could have done that level of work in Colorado. No doubt, some local shops could create even better work.
For the bureaucrats who chose the agency, it's my guess that "the work" wasn't the primary concern. Even if it were, I'm not sure that a government process for vendor selection -- and eventually how they work with the agency -- is conducive to making great advertising.

that ad is horrific. as a former Colorado resident i can safely say that they have missed the pulse of the Colorado outdoors entirely.
what is with the women in that photo? lipstick? you've got to be kidding me.
Brooks Freehill, John Johnston, Jason Dewey, Brian Bailey - any of them would have killed.
everywhere i look these days people are talking about Denver being the next big art/design/cultural city... only despite their best efforts to not be.
oh, great blog Andy.
You would think that the Colorado legislature could find an agency within the state to promote their own backyard.
Why is it that the grass always seems greener over there to many Colorado businesses?
Yes the creative is awful. The design is bad. The photo is stock. Old stock. The bike handlebars are out of date. The top she is wearing is out of style. The headline style is dated and I've seen this line in this structure before.
But deeper than all of this, why would someone from out of state spend a few thousand dollars, and their hard earned vacation time to come do something they could do at home.
IE: Get muddy on a mountain in what looks like a very flat non inpiring area?
This strategically is all they could come up with, getting muddy on a bike?
Andy, I'm so glad you have this from last year, because the new stuff - just in time for the DNC, ya'll -- is embarrassing. Glad our tax dollars are going to MMG Worldwide.
